Institutional chair specification in Indian schools and colleges covers four main material categories. Each has a legitimate application within an institution. The specification error — common in both school and university procurement — is applying a single material choice throughout all spaces, when different rooms have genuinely different requirements that different materials serve.

This guide is a complete reference for the four main classroom chair materials: what each one is, what it does well, where it belongs, and what to avoid.


Polypropylene (PP) Shell Chairs

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer moulded under heat and pressure into a rigid shell that forms the seat and backrest in one continuous form. The result is a chair that is hard, lightweight, stackable, and essentially indestructible from normal institutional abuse.

Material properties: Non-porous, smooth surface that wipes clean with any cleaning agent. Impact-resistant enough to handle dropping, dragging, and rough stacking. UV-stabilised PP does not yellow or become brittle with age in the way that unstabilised plastic does. Available in a wide range of colours, which allows institutions to specify chair colours that contribute to a designed environment rather than default to institutional grey.

The comfort limitation: PP shell provides no cushioning. The contact between a hard plastic surface and a seated student over a 45-minute to 60-minute class period produces increasing discomfort. For younger students in shorter class periods, this is manageable. For college-level students in 90-minute lectures on a PP shell chair — without a cushion — the discomfort reduces attention in the final portion of the session.

Where PP shell belongs: Standard classrooms for junior and middle school (where class periods are shorter and physical activity between classes provides postural relief). Examination halls and multi-purpose spaces that reconfigure frequently. Canteen and dining areas. Any space where cleaning ease and durability are the primary criteria.

The frame matters as much as the shell: PP shells are mounted on steel frames — typically tubular steel in standard chair leg configurations (four-leg, sled base, or stacking frame). The quality of the frame weld and the gauge of the steel determine how long the chair holds its structure before becoming wobbly. For institutional procurement, specifying 19mm or 22mm diameter tubular steel frames with tig-welded joints is meaningfully better than thinner gauge frames with spot welds.


Padded Campus Chairs

Padded campus chairs (sometimes called student chairs or seminar chairs) are PP shell frames or formed steel frames with a fixed foam pad covered in fabric or leatherette at the seat surface. The shell or frame provides structure; the fixed pad provides minimal cushioning beyond the hard shell.

The compromise position: More comfortable than a bare PP shell for longer sessions, significantly cheaper than a full task chair with adjustment mechanisms, and more practical for institutional spaces than full upholstered fixed seating.

Where padded campus chairs belong: Senior secondary school classrooms and junior college classrooms where sessions are longer. Seminar rooms and coaching centre classrooms where the seating faces one direction and session lengths are intermediate (60 to 90 minutes). Any space where the brief is more comfortable than a PP shell but not requiring the full specification of task seating.

Writing tablet variants: Many padded campus chairs are available with a fold-out writing tablet attached to one arm. This combination — padded seat, writing tablet — is the standard specification for seminar halls and coaching institutes across Delhi NCR. The writing surface should be large enough for A4 paper plus a phone or calculator (minimum 35cm × 25cm), and the fold-out mechanism should lock positively in the deployed position without requiring manual effort to keep in place.


Mesh Task Chairs

Mesh task chairs — office-style chairs with height adjustment, backrest tilt, and arm rests, featuring a mesh backrest — are the appropriate specification for computer labs and any institutional space where sustained computer use is the primary activity.

Breathability in Indian conditions: The defining advantage in Indian institutional contexts. Sessions of two to four hours at a computer workstation in a warm environment — even with air conditioning — produce significant back heat build-up in foam upholstered seating. Mesh back eliminates this, providing passive ventilation between the chair and the occupant's back.

Adjustment mechanism for diverse student populations: A computer lab serving students of heights ranging from 155cm to 190cm needs seat height adjustment to allow each student to achieve an appropriate working posture. Task chairs with a pneumatic seat height adjustment range of 450mm to 550mm (seat height from floor) cover most of this range adequately. Fixed-height seating in a computer lab forces students outside the optimal height range into poor postures that produce discomfort and musculoskeletal problems over sustained daily use.

Quality in mesh chairs: The grade of the mesh (fibre gauge, weave density, edge attachment method) determines how long the chair maintains its seating surface quality. Cheap mesh stretches and sags within two years. Quality mesh maintains its tension throughout a ten-year service life. This is the most important quality variable in mesh chair procurement and the one most consistently under-specified.

Where mesh task chairs belong: Computer labs, teacher workstations at teacher's desks, staff offices, and any space where the occupant is working at a fixed workstation in a sustained seated posture.


Full Upholstered Fixed Seating

Upholstered fixed seating — foam cushion seat and backrest with fabric or leatherette upholstery, mounted on a fixed steel frame — is the standard for auditoriums, lecture halls, and formal assembly spaces.

Acoustic contribution: Fabric upholstery absorbs sound. In a large auditorium or lecture hall, the difference in room acoustics between an empty hall (all hard surfaces) and a full hall (upholstered seating) is substantial. The empty hall rings and reverberates; the full hall is acoustically controlled. This is the reason auditorium specifications always include upholstered seating — the acoustic improvement is a technical necessity, not a luxury.

Comfort for formal sessions: Convocation events, guest lectures, conferences, and long academic sessions in lecture halls involve occupancy periods of two to four hours without movement breaks. Upholstered seating provides the comfort level appropriate for these sessions.

Where full upholstered fixed seating belongs: Auditoriums and assembly halls. University lecture halls and seminar rooms with fixed seating. Any formal event space where the appearance and acoustic contribution of upholstered seating are both required.
