Most people evaluate furniture in showrooms the way they evaluate cars in a showroom — they walk around it, sit in it, note that it looks good, and decide based largely on price and aesthetics. The actual quality of the piece — whether it will still look and work the same five years from now — is invisible in a casual showroom visit.
That's not inevitable. There are specific, hands-on checks that take three to five minutes and reveal the quality of any piece of modular furniture far more accurately than the brochure or the salesperson's explanation. Check 1: The Edge Banding Test (30 Seconds, Highly Predictive)
Find the edge of a door panel, a drawer front, or a shelf — any horizontal or vertical cut edge of the board that has been finished with PVC tape. Run your fingernail firmly along the edge tape from one end to the other.
What you want to find: The tape is flush with the board surface. There is no step between the tape face and the laminate face. At corners and joints between two pieces of tape, there is no gap or raw board visible. The tape feels continuous.
What a problem looks like: Any lifting at a corner. Any gap where two pieces of tape meet. A step between the tape face and the laminate surface that your nail catches on. Raw board visible at any point.
Edge banding failure is the single most common quality problem in modular furniture used in Indian homes. The humidity cycling of Indian seasons enters the board at gaps and causes the delamination process to begin. Every gap you find in a showroom sample is a gap that will admit monsoon humidity in your home.
A manufacturer with factory edge banding done on automated machines will have consistent, flush edges with clean corner joints. On-site edge banding done by hand is more variable and more likely to show the problems above.
The verdict: If the edges are poor on a showroom piece that was set up specifically for display, the edges on the furniture delivered to your home will not be better.
Check 2: The Drawer Test (60 Seconds)
Open every drawer on the display piece. Pull it out fully and close it again. Do this three or four times in quick succession.
What you want:
- The drawer opens without resistance throughout its full travel — no friction, no point where it sticks and then releases
- It closes smoothly and decelerates gently in the last 30–40mm of travel (this is the soft-close mechanism working)
- The drawer face is flush with the cabinet front when closed — not raised on one side, not protruding at the top or bottom
- The internal drawer body does not flex or wobble when you push it side-to-side
What a problem looks like:
- A drawer that sticks midway and then suddenly releases — indicates a bent or poorly fitted runner
- A drawer that slams shut rather than soft-closing — the soft-close mechanism is either absent, broken, or misadjusted
- A drawer face that is visibly out of alignment with the adjacent doors
- A drawer body that wobbles when pushed laterally — indicates thin-section drawer sides or poorly fitted runners
Drawer slides are used thousands of times over the life of a kitchen or wardrobe. A drawer that already shows friction or alignment problems in a showroom will become significantly worse under actual daily use. Soft-close drawer runners at the quality required for Indian kitchens should be smooth from full open to full close with a controlled deceleration at the end.
Check 3: The Hinge Test (60 Seconds)
Open a cabinet door fully and look at the hinges from the side. Then close the door and look at the door face relative to the adjacent doors or the cabinet frame.
What you want:
- The hinge mounting plates (the part of the hinge screwed into the cabinet wall) are fully seated against the board surface — no gap between the mounting plate and the board
- The hinge mechanism allows the door to hang at exactly the right position — door face flush with adjacent doors, equal gap on all sides
- The door opens smoothly and closes with controlled deceleration (soft-close hinge)
- After opening and closing five times, the door returns to exactly the same position each time
What problems look like:
- A hinge mounting plate that is seated at an angle — indicates board damage at the drill hole or improper installation
- A door face that is higher on one side than the other — poor hinge adjustment or twisted cabinet frame
- A door that requires more force to close in the last 10mm than throughout the rest of its travel — indicates a soft-close hinge that is over-compressed, which will fail prematurely
- Any play or rattle when the door is gently shaken — the hinge screws are not fully engaged with the board material
Hinges are stressed every time a door opens and closes. In a kitchen with multiple family members using cabinets throughout the day, each hinge may complete 15–20 cycles per day. Over ten years, that's 50,000–70,000 cycles. A hinge that shows any play or alignment problem in a showroom sample will fail well before that.
Check 4: The Surface Hardness Test (30 Seconds)
Press firmly with your thumbnail on the laminate surface of a door panel or drawer front. Press hard enough that you would expect to leave a mark in a soft material.
What you want: No impression. The HPL surface should resist the pressure without any visible indentation.
What a problem looks like: A visible or tactile impression left by the thumbnail. This indicates either a very thin laminate or a soft, low-density substrate beneath the laminate. Standard HPL at 0.8mm or above on an HDHMR or plywood substrate leaves no impression under normal contact pressure.
Also check the surface for existing marks — fine scratches that show as light lines across the surface when viewed at an angle to the light. A display piece in a showroom that has been handled regularly will develop micro-scratches on a thin or soft laminate surface within weeks. Good HPL at appropriate thickness shows no such marks after months of showroom display handling.
Check 5: The Frame Stability Test (30 Seconds)
With a freestanding unit on a showroom floor, try gently rocking it by pushing at the top. Try pushing it sideways as well.
What you want: Essentially no movement. A well-constructed freestanding cabinet or wardrobe unit on a flat floor should feel completely stable.
What a problem looks like: Any perceptible rocking when the unit is pushed at its top corner. Any diagonal twist when pushed at opposite corners. This indicates inadequate back panel stiffness, poor joint construction, or both.
The back panel of a cabinet provides the structural racking resistance — it prevents the cabinet from collapsing diagonally. A thin back panel or one that is tacked rather than properly set into grooves in the side panels will allow diagonal movement. In daily use, this diagonal play is what causes doors to go out of alignment over time and what makes the unit feel increasingly wobbly with age.
Check 6: The Material Question
After doing the physical checks, ask one specific question: "What board grade is used for the carcass — BWP plywood, HDHMR, or standard MDF?"
A manufacturer or dealer who knows what they're selling will answer this directly. "It's good quality board" is not an answer — it is an evasion. "It's HDHMR at 18mm thickness" or "it's BWP plywood carcass" is an answer.
The reason this matters: two pieces of modular furniture can look identical in a showroom and be in entirely different board-grade categories.
